HULA BIO: NANI ANTONIO (from Hula Instructor Mili Aranda)
Nani has been dancing at a young age of 9 years old with the Late Kumu Hula Nelani Rogers, which she had learned the many dances of the Polynesian Islands. She had studied & trained under a brilliant creative Polynesian Dance Master Raymoki Engler learning & conditioning beyond traditions calling it “Fresh Wave”. Her performance level, hard training & entertaining experiences were trained, as well. This brought her to join the well-known traveling & entertainment group “Spirit of Polynesia” in the early 90s, under the Late Jill Clark Baird & Kimo Baird, who brought Polynesian entertainment across the U.S., Costa Rica & Many Cruise Lines.
Shifting gears she joined to further her hula studies with “Hula Halau O’Nalua“ under the direction of the Late Nalua Manaois. She also studied under the Award-Wining Tahitian Group “Otea Api” under the direction of Ori Master Anthony Manaois & Kumu Katrina DeJesus. Here Nani studied in both culture-Hawaiian & Tahitian: language, protocol, skills, competition level, costume making & much more. In the meantime, she & I had co-founders & directors of our family’s “live” music, drums & dance entertainment group called “Touch of Polynesia”. In the mid years of 2000s, she settled to continue her hula studies with “Halau Kaiaulu” under the direction of Kumu Hula Michael Yamashita.
Her family’s hula lineage comes from other hula masters. “Halau Kawaihoa“ in O’ahu under the direction of her 1st cousin & her husband Kumu Hula Greg Lontoyao. Nani’s sister studied under the Late Kumu Tiare Clifford of Kauai / San Francisco. Nani had opened the doors to train my daughters & my nieces at their early ages of 3-8 years old, in the mid 70s. To date, with my daughters’ continued trainings & experiences with many gifted instructors & Kumu Hula, they were both Uniki (Graduated) as “Kumu Hula” in 2022 under Kumu Hula Dennis Imamura in O’ahu. Nani attended this honored celebration to witness this proud graduation as being their first teacher to my daughters:
•Kumu Hula Remie Aranda of RAHITI-CA / H?lau Hula O Keli’ikoanuiokeao
•Kumu Hula Jaemie Cadiente of RAHITI, HI / H?lau Hula O Ke Ao ?Ula N?weo A Ka Pu?uk?.
Nani is a mild soft spoken person & full of dance knowledge experience, but watch those eyes if you know best! Nani Antonio, now shares her Aloha of Hula & accomplishments with the community, and continues to share her Aloha performing as well.
